New Guy Here

Raised many different kinds of reptiles all throught the 90's but ended up with a forced layoff. Now I am back into boas. The wife is quite worried about the "smell" of raising snakes. I think tha tmaybe it is the bedding I used. Does anyone have any suggestions on a way to keep all odors to a minimum?

I appreciate any and all help.

I believe that poop should never dry in a cage, I do not have a set cleaning schedule, I clean as needed.

There are times during breeding season when I can't get the waste out right away but I remove it asap. Another thing that I do is compost all the waste and the old bedding so that it does not sit in a trash can at all.

I also use shredded aspen for bedding...it has a pleasant aroma and absorbs the wast pretty good.

Hope this helps and welcome back

I also use the shredded aspen. Its ability to sbsorb odors is wonderful. I used to use cypress and it wasn't very absorbent.

I also don't have cleaning days. I check on everybody and spot clean when I see it. I don't compost, but I do take the trash out every day. I bought a smaller trash can for our snake room to force me to take it out often.

Unless someone just did a fresh one, you wouldn't even know there were over 50 snakes in there!

I agree I spot check daily and I do a complete clean when needed, as far as the composting goes...if you have a flower or vegetable garden the composted bedding and waste is better than any fertilizer....and I am using it full cycle

Dedicate a room for it weather strip the door way. And ASPEN and keeping up on cleaning is the answer!

ardfarkl Jun 15, 2009 06:15 PM

The weather strip is a great idea. It is my computer room so it is dedicated for my toys. Picked up some aspen today so here we go.

Really appreciate everyones input.
