Question, for the knowledgeable....

cbmorphs Jun 14, 2009 10:06 PM

Questions for my most recent litter of Sunglow Arabesque born on 6/04/09.

I'm concerned about some of babies from that litter that had yolk bellies when born and still do.

My question is, will or can this potentially hurt them? It's been 11 days since they were born and some of them (mostly the Arabesques) still have good size yolk bellies...

I've been keeping them all together at around 90 to 92 on the hot side 78 to 80 on cool side. I've also been misting them daily along with offering them plenty of fresh water. I also, 2 or 3 times a day kind of nudge them along to get them moving along, so that the yolk or substance in their little bellies don't harden! Only 2 of them have shed, which were both today.

One of the Sunglow Arabesque was on the thin side when it was born, it's also one of the babies that shed. I'm including pictures of her/him, for reference to one of the babies that still has a fairly large yolk belly. It feels kind of firm to soft, like a partially digested meal would? It seems to be going down but I'm kind of worried that there could be problems? I've also included pics of her/him too, I've marked which ones which.

Hopefully my pictures give a good enough reference for some accurate suggestions?

On some of my other litters were there was yolk-bellies, the swelling went down within 3 to 5 days, not 10 plus days!!!
None of these questions or problems are in any of the books I have, so I'm at a loss as what to do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Notice the belly!!!

You can really see the big belly here!!!

I have a bad feeling about this one and two of the others that happen to be Arabesque too! I don't want to loose any of them, what should I do???

Thanks for the help anyone can or will suggest! Sorry for making this so long, probably a common problem, just not one I've experienced!

I would continue to keep them moist and at least 92*-94* warm end and at least 84*-86* cool side.
But I can't tell you this from experience just from reading and how I would approach it.
I understand being concerned about those beautiful Arab babies with belies like that at this late date
I think hardening could be a concern
Hopefully those with real experience could give you a solid answer

Thanks Larry this was very helpful! I'm pretty much already doing all this and more... I'll raise the heat back up, I originally had it closer to 95 on the hot side but got worried I might cook them, so I lowered it a little, I think I'll be safe at 90 to 93.
The worst of all the babies is this Sunglow Arabesque in the bottom 4 photo's of this post. It still actually has part of it's ambilical cord that hasn't fallen off yet, maybe that's a good sign as all the other babies cords have fallen off... The Albino Arabesque and Normal Arab still have a big belly too. I guess I'll have a few more days of worrying yet and hopefully that will be the end of it!

Thanks again Larry, you seem to have a good memory of past post containing valuable information! What do you do file all them important post's on your computer?....good idea!

Just my two cents and I want to touch on a point that Larry made about hardening I would be concerned if that were happening, other than that I would keep them warm and and humid.

I think they should be fine

I've had a couple litters with big, yolky bellies in the last two seasons. This one below had the biggest belly of any of them and he's doing great today.

I keep them in the mid 90s and wait them out. Don't be disoucaraged if the big bellied ones don't feed immediately either. Some of them will take longer to decide to feed.

I also am wondering about this to. I have a male hypo around 2 years old and his belly looks like that and when you feel that area its hard. He still eats and goes to the bathroom fine but i dont no whats up with the hard belly it wasent like that before, but its prolly been like this for around 6 months now.
Thx Mike

You should not be feeling a hard lump in your boas abdomen, I think I would want a qualified vet to take a look

Good luck, keep us posted.
