I have a male leo that only eats wax worms.

alebron Sep 14, 2003 02:12 PM

The male is about 4 or 5 years old, and about 9.5 inches. He has been always been a picky eater ever since he became an adult. Last year he his diet was grasshoppers(use to be his favorie), meal worms, super worms, and large black crickets, not petstore ones. This year he only ocasionly eats a grass hopper. He just discovered wax worms over hte summer and is hooked on them. The only other food i seen him take was a huge green 2 inch catipillar. His room mate a female gecko will eat any bug I toss in the tank. Is their any other food out their to feed my male? Oh yeah he is also very healthy and has the brightest skin i haver ever seen.
I also have:
1 Whites tree frog
2 baby red eared sliders
3 fire bellied toads
2 eggs in a incubator

How many times a day did you feed your leo wax worms? How many? How often?

Wax worms are very, VERY, addicting to leos, and sometimes its hard for them to get off the "waxie drug"

You can try butter worms or silk worms. Butter worms look like wax worms, but are much bigger and come in colors like pinks, reds, oranges, and yellows. Plus they are high in calcium.

Answer the questions above and let me know.
Thanx

I feed him once or twice every week with 10 wax worms per serving. I thought about rubbing other insects with wax worms, but he does't smell it. With wax worms the movement entices him to eat. In addition were can you get butter or silk worms. I have never seen them for sale ina any pets store i been to.

YOu should feed him more often, every day for juveniles and every other day for adults. You probably can't get silkworms or butterworms at your pet stores so pick some up at a reptile show or order them through the mail. These insects unfortunately are not a healthy staple either. It would be unhealthy to allow the gecko to continue eating only waxworms and like I said below if you stop offering it waxworms it will not starve itself.

He only eats 2 or 3 times a week. I learned that if I feed him more than 3 times a week he just smells at and ignores it. He not skinny, he has been eating wax worms for about 2 months and has a bright skin, fat tail, and body. Also, my leo eggs when i use a small flash light to light them up shows red blotches but no vessels. What does this mean.

That should be fine. My 125 gram male never eats more than twice a week and he has been doing good at that pace for 2 years now.

Of course he's not skinny, waxworms are all fat, the problem with waxworms is that they have no real nutritional value. The not eating more than a few days a week could be due to the fact that when he eats he is worried he won't get food for some time and eats extra. Every other day is okay but ideally mealworms should be available at all times.

Well finally my male ate a 2 inch grasshopper when I fed him at 12 o' clock at night and gobbled down the grasshoppers with no problem.
Also my male doesn't go for meal worms he just ignores them. Also when willthe nutrition defieciency show if a leo was just fed on wax worms.

You might never see visual signs of a health problem but the overall life span of the gecko will likely be effected. Wax orms are okay for a treat but like people you can't live off of candy.

Also I would be careful with caterpillars I've heard some types are poisonous.
