finally deserticola love

sdmf31 Jun 15, 2009 10:31 PM

hey everyone, well i have been raising 2 wild caught great basins(actually my dad stood in for me, i was in the marines but any way) for the past three years and i wasnt really sure if they were really great basins( they are form north west new mexico) but after talking with a few what i would call experts i think they are so anyways i am just on here to say that my male and female finally mated today, both have been great and i am really excited to see the outcome, of coarse theyll all be normals but non the less i didnt get into this for any other reason than breeding and raising, anything other than normal is a bonus. sorry to rant i am just excited!!!!!!! its been a while since i have been able to witness the amazing habits of this great genus of snakes.

Congrats! Would love to see some pictures of the parents. I live in NM and have yet to make it up to that area to try to see what NM deserticola look like. Once again, congrats and hope you get some nice offspring from them.

when ever i figure out how the heck to up load pics on here ill post some the great basins up here are pretty variable, its pretty cool how different a snake from one place and another from a mile away can have such drastic differences in pattern and color.

That pinkish undertone is really attractive on those gophers!

Thank you fot the compliment. Byron has a pair from this area that bred for him. They are some of the most mellow snakes in the wild that I've ever come across. Funny thing is just 30 minutes in the opposite direction the Gophers look totally different.

Nick (Metalpest), who herps that area way more than I do says these are deserticola/catenifer intergrades. I am inclined to believe him, as I saw DORS further northwest (will post pics when I come across alive one) that looked like P.c. catenifer. Here's another pic.

Hey Reako!

I think it depends on where you are, the further east you are in the county the more they look like deserticola to me. I was told my area is the intergrade zone and they sure look different just down the road. It has also come to my attention that annectans range up to the Gabes and some people think that ours here also have annectans influence.

Nice couple of gophers by the way!

I have a friend that lives in Palmdale thatpulled a neat looking little annectens /deserticola intergrade out of a friend's yard. Wish I had a pic of the snake. Great coloring. Hope some luck comes our way w/ this warm weather. If you've got Gopers west of the area I pm'd you about please post pics. I thinkit's really cool how such a relatively small area produces such variability in Gophers.
