Aspen or Reptile Sand for substrate?

rachel4rent Jun 16, 2009 09:13 AM

I recently bought a children's python from the Hamburg show. She's very docile to handle and ate a frozen/thawed pinky right away! I was wondering what you guys prefer for substrate. I was considering either reptile sand or aspen bedding. Any comments, suggestions or ideas would be helpful!

of the two you listed - Aspen, hands down.

Aspen, paper towels, craft paper, newsprint, contractor paper would be fine. I would stay away from the reptile sand for snakes.

Even though sand looks nice it is almost never worth the hassle. You would have to feed in a separate container and their will always be sand on the floor around the cage. Aspen is one of the best substrates around for any low humidity species.

Aspen over sand any day. Sand is pretty though but not worth the potential problems for some species of snakes. Personally, I now only use newspaper for my Anthill & Woma pythons. I only use other substrates for the females nesting boxes or a humidity box during a difficult shed.
Enjoy your new acquisition.

Thanks! I saw your previous post with the Anthill hatchings and "awed"! Congrats!

I've tried everything under the sun, as probably have alot of folks here. Everything has some good and bad characteristics.

For the baby Childrens python, I think your best bet is crumpled newspaper. They can hide in and among it, and heat from below gets trapped in crevices to provide nice basking areas.

Adults will do well on cypress mulch or aspen, or else paper. I have some dimpled Kraft paper from Uline. It is great for heavier-bodied snakes.
