I have Follicles again within 4 months

thunderpaws Jun 16, 2009 11:57 AM

Hello,

My big girl het albino had 8 follicles back around February. I was cycling her around November last year. I never saw a copulation and she never became gravid. The follicles went away around March or so. I asked a few people with extensive experience if a female could have follicles more than once a year. They were not a 100 percent and told me that it was usually only once a year. So this morning I went down to clean and check things and she was laying on the cold side which she never does. I checked her for follicles and sure enough she has a bunch. I put a male in with her and we will see. I am afraid about putting the male back with her because it could mess up her feed schedule and the males. I was not planning on any more breeding until next season. The male was producing descent sperm back in November but he was producing. He weighs about 900 grams now and weighed around 550 grams last November. Any thoughts or direction. I have done everything in my power to get these two snakes to breed. I know they will breed when they are ready, but at what point do I start thinking about my male being a dud. He is really nice looking and I would never part with him but I am wondering if he has it in him to breed.

Thanks for any help,
Bill

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have some normals that I could put him with but I am working them with a pastel. I do not want any unnecessary het albinos. Anyway, I am going to just leave him in for a week or two and we will see. He is an 07. I have a spider het albino female he will be with in December or January and I will forgive him if he locks up with her.

Thanks,
Bill

We have an 06 male albino. He wouldn't have anything to do with the girls in the 07/08 breeding season. The 08/09 season has been a lot different, he has bred several girls and has one clutch in the incubator due on July 1st.

I've found that some males only need to be 6 months, most need to be 1 1/2 years and some need to be 2 1/2 years. It all depends on the individual male.

Hey,

Thanks for the post. I will have about 3 females to breed him to in 2010 so I think that will yield some better results for sure.

Females can have follicles in them that are committed to this year and later years. If you were to look at an ultrasound of a female building follicles, you may see ones at different stages of development. The ones for this year being much larger than ones for next year. I suppose it would be possible for a female to absorb follicles for this year and 4 months later begin building again.

Don't go looking for snakes--you might find them.
