First litter = Horrible day... Graphic!

JasonRobeck Jun 16, 2009 06:49 PM

I went home a little early to pick up one of last year's critters that had finally found a new home.

I walked in on the finale of my female albino giving birth. She wasn't due for a couple more weeks. I'd been looking forward to this litter all year. She'd been bred by my motley het albino male and was looking good coming up on her due date.

I could tell immediately that this early date wasn't gonna be good. There were no little heads sticking out of the goo taking their first breaths. No motion at all. After moving the big girl to her new cage, she looks to be doing fine by the way, the assessing of the litter began.

Final count - 17 premies all dead - 15 slugs. 7 albinos of one sort or another and 10 others. Half of the litter were motley.

Here are the pics.

The one in the middle looks like a super.

Real nice motley. This one looked closest to being full term.

Too premature to tell, but what was it?

The super. Way too premature.

that it hurts because we have built up such high hopes over the gestation period. I am glad mom is okay. Next year will surely be better.

Thanks Ty. Hopes are dashed for that litter but you're right, not all is lost. The female looks to be in good shape and while I might not breed her next year I'll definitely look at the following year.

expected litters. I am sure you will know when it is right to give your female another go at it.

Very sorry for your loss. Looks like it could of been an awesome litter. I hope your female recovers quickly and fully.

tevie84 Jun 17, 2009 04:01 AM

That sucks...Sorry for asking or saying but I thought you said the female was just an albino? From the looks of it you produced super motleys and super motley albinos. Was the mom a albino motley?

JasonRobeck Jun 17, 2009 12:04 PM

No, she was born in 2000 and produced litters in 06 and 07 and had last year off.

JasonRobeck Jun 17, 2009 12:06 PM

. No, though. She's just an albino. I don't know how the super ended up in the mix.

vinnimac Jun 17, 2009 09:06 AM

Very sad for your loss. Is the female young, just too many for her at her age, maybe? Not trying to judge or second guess, just curious, isall, as it's something I am interested in doing.

boaphile Jun 17, 2009 09:52 AM

In my experience, many litters consist of about half babies and half slugs. I can't remember a half baby / half slug litter being deposited early though. If you would like to call me I would be happy to walk you through a couple things that I think might have caused this unfortunate situation. In my opinion those babies do not look as developed as they should have been being only two weeks from the due date. They look just a tiny bit undercooked to me from where they should have been. Again, feel free to call me and I'll be happy to talk you through a couple ideas that I have. Sorry about the depressing litter Jason.

I sucks to have your hopes dashed, but it sucks way worse to see all those little buggers not even have a chance.
