feeding hatchling

othy Sep 14, 2003 03:03 PM

I just bought a baby kingsnake. The person who sold it to me said they've been feeding it pinkies. I read that the prey item should not be larger around than the width of the snake. However, I have not seen any pinkies that small. Is it safe to feed pinkies larger than the width, or are there alternative prey I could feed it?

What type of a kingsnake is it? Most all kingsnake hatchlings can feed on a 1 or 2 day old pink. Being larger than the diameter of the snake is no problem. Do not try any other prey if it is feeding on mice. Mice are way more readily available and less costlier than lizards or other prey.

I would try to cover the snake and the frozen thawed pink with a dark colored bowl. After about an hour check it and see if he has taken the pink. This has worked for me. After he does this next feeding try to feed him w/o the bowl. If he doesn't take cover it up again.
