This was found in s. New York and appears to be a northern water snake. Any second opinions?

Nerodia all the way. There's a population in W.NY where I'm from where most if not all are a solid grayish black from the time they are sub-adults. Everyone from around that area calls them 'black racers', LoL... Nice find!

It may be that the population is dark, but I also see solid-colored ones pop up around here (Philadelphia are) too. I just figure they're either particularly muddy, stained, or that some of the big old ones get kind of solid colored over time.
