RI scare.

Desert_Punk Jun 18, 2009 06:16 PM

I own a brb and every blue moon she seems to make a soft "pop" noise(I have to hold her head near my ear), I've previously owned a rtb, and he died of RI, which I didn't see any signs of RI, but when I went to get him checked out, a day later he died.(the vet didn't have the right meds due to a late shipment :[[) So what should I do?(I'm 16 and currently broke) should I try to give him some vitamins, or try something esle? (Thanks)

Would the "pop" sound happen to occur while she is in shed?

Well, she seems very slighty cloundy, very slightly. otherwise she might seem she's getting ready to go into the process of shedding.

Some snakes will develop a bit of a "wheeze" while in shed that goes away afterwards.

Other than that, answering the questions Jeff posed will be a good start in attempting to determine what is going on.

....Respiratory infections do not just happen for no reason. If you provide the correct husbandry for these snakes then health problems including respiratory infections rarely occur. You provide us with no information except that the snake makes a popping noise. With just that information we have no way of making even a guess about what is going on with the snake. A popping noise could possibly be a symptom of a respiratory infection but it could be caused by something else. How old and how large is the snake? Where did you get it and how long have you had it? Do you think it is captive born or imported? Do you house it with any other snakes? What sort of cage do you keep it in? What temperature and humidity do you provide for it? What are you feeding it? When did it last feed? When did it last shed and did it shed in one piece? Do you have a recent photo of the snake? These questions may seem strange but they all are very important clues that could help us to help you with your snake. Do not attempt to give the snake vitamins.

BRB's are not soundless snakes..they do snort, huff, hiss and occasionally whistle (usually when there is stuck shed in their nostrils) none of which has anything to do with a respiratory infection.

Both of my BRB's give the occasional huff, if they are protesting being handled, or not allowed to go where they want to go. But both are perfectly healthy, eat well and show no other signs of any URI. If your BRB was wheezing and making popping noses frequently then I would say take him to a vet.
