Help! Fighting Turtles!!

OldTime Jun 18, 2009 07:21 PM

I just finished constructing an 8’ x 28’ out door enclosure for 2 Eastern box turtles. Here is a photo looking down its entire length.

1 of the turtles in the enclosure is an adult male and the other is a medium sized female. They have never been kept together before. A few hours after they were released into the enclosure the male started acting very aggressively towards the female. I have been fortunate enough not to have to deal with this sort of problem much in the past. How much danger is the female in and how concerned should I be? Will this aggression die down a bit n time? Do I need to add 2 more females.... because I don’t have them! Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Oh...by the way it’s just getting dark here on a rainy night so I wasn’t able to get a great shot but here was the uncomfortable scene just a few minutes ago.

Nice habitat! The best thing is to have several cave-like structures so the female can hide in when she feels like getting away. Some males are very agressive when a female is not receptive to them, in which case you may have to divide that pen into two separate pens. It wouldn't be bad for them because it looks like you have plenty of room.

Thanks for the pictures-nice turtles!
