Basking

ooanwfndglryoo Sep 14, 2003 03:47 PM

Hi guys....I pretty much just completed my tank yesterday...The final things I placed in it were just some decorations (plastic cactus's) and a hiding spot for my dragon. I placed my hiding spot on the cool side of the tank and the hiding spot is basically one of those large half pieces of wood you can get at petsmart or petco. Well, since I put that in there it seems as if my dragon hardly ever goes on her basking tree....She spends most of here time ontop of her hiding spot on the cool side of the tank. Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do? Thanks alot in advance

Hhmm could be that's where the temps feel right for her/him. Are you sure your temps are correct, and not to hot? What are they? When people say 105-110 they are talking about surface temps on the basking spot itself under the heat source and not the air temps around where they bask. I use those half logs as my basking spots for them on the hot side under a MVB basking light. Maybe she/he is not to comfortable climbing up high to bask. Mine seem to like to stay most of the time on the ground, just going up about 7 inches on top of a half log to reach proper basking surface temps. All depends basically on your temps and what kind of uvb sources you are using to allow for such a low to the ground basking spot. Also dragons themselves vary. Some like to climb some don't. If your using the fluorescent uvb it is really almost impossible to have such a low to the ground basking spot because the uvb rays don't reach much farther then 12 inches from the bulb. Also is this higher tree branch wide enough for the dragon to sit and bask on comfortable? Just a couple guesses, really just got to find where your dragon is most comfortable. Ohh one other thing if the dragons basking spot was ever on that side the dragon might be prone to go to that spot for heat. Not likely but it has happened to me once when I changed a dragons basking side =). unlikely but possible.
