Rat rack question

kingofspades Jun 19, 2009 03:21 AM

Anyone know the dimensions of those black concrete mixing tubs that Home Depot sells for $5 each?

They measure 27.5" X 19.75" X 6"
Here is a link to plans to build a rack using them.

Hope it helps

why you go and buy all the tubs you will need before making a rack....buy one to look at even, but before you make a rack, buy enough to at least double fill the rack....many many many times people get a rack made and then find out the company changes dimensions or styles of tubs...at times they stop making tubs altogether.....

if your rack will hold 20 tubs...better buy 40, the rats will make sure to chew out of some....buy good ones so they chew through less....

I think they can't chew through the concrete tubs...due to them being all smooth.

Yeah, I just went up and bought all the stuff today. I'm making a 4 box rack. (I only have two groups of 1.2, and that leaves two tubs for feeders.)
I have the frames together, so tomorrow I add the hardware cloth and put it all together.

I'll post pics.

Smooth edges have nothing to do with it. Rats can chew through pipe. Always have back up tubs.............ALWAYS!

Imangine you livng in a tub your whole life.........wouldn't you try to escape no matter what?

I know I had Norway rats chew through some really thin concrete mixing tubs they used to sell about 15 years ago for I think it was only $1. The problem was that they could wrinkle and give them something to get hold of.

With the more recent much more ridged concrete mixing tubs from Home Depot I didn't see any damage from a few months of ASF's and now Syrian hamsters but maybe Norway rats have a special gift for gnawing and would eventually get these too.

I can't speak for ASFs, but I know the amount of things a Norway rat can chew through is mind boggling. Concrete and steel are nothing to them, let alone plastic tubs.

I made mine a 3 tub-wish would have done more-got rats coming out my ears now-feeders, dumbos, hairless, dumbohairless. i did automatic water system works great. What I find that works great and is cheap is med sized plastic totes-cut a square in top and put wire mesh over-can even incooperate feeder right in top so can just drop in lab blacks, even convereted a stationary tub into rat cage-just made hinged lid with 2x4's and wire mesh cost less than $5.

I had something like those boxes you were talking about and they had an issue with condensation from the rat pee.
I like the rack. They seem much happier.
