E. dione, special clutch-hatching *PICS*

Gidivandebelt Jun 19, 2009 07:04 AM

Hi all,

Here I want to show you a special clutch which I get from my female grey striped. As far as I know the last time she copulated was 3 years back, but meanwhile I was introducing some tiger males with her, but never confirmed a copulating.

But now when the clutch hatch I can surtenly tell you at least some of the offspring have a tiger as dad!

Here the pics:

Hope you can also she that some have a realy red belly, and in diones the color will turn up much brighter with age. Also: these pics where taken directly after hatching, will post new pics in 2-3 weeks, after they shed and eat.

Thanks for watching!

Best regards,

Hey Gidi,

You come up with quite some interesting stuff lately. I'm definately looking forward to those post shed pictures.

As for me, just wait for this year's results of my ongoing "science projects". If only one of them goes right, I'm sure it will make some waves.

Best regards,

Herman.

Hi Herman,

Thanks! You can be sure I will post some post shed pics!

About your "science projects" sounds interesting. What species?

Best regards,
Gidi

Pantherophis obsoletus is the only species I currently work with. With any luck, there will be Whitesided Blotchless Yellow/Glades Ratsnakes and Axanthic Brindle Black Ratsnakes. Both recombinations haven't been done before, as far as I know that is.

Herman. You're killing me! Now this sounds like a very interesting project. How about some details.....??

OK, here we go.

The axanthism I'm working with is different from the one already established by Ben Hoiting. Mine has a dominant mode of inheritance. When breeding an axanthic snake to a normal, about half of the offspring turns out axanthic. They lack the yellows, and the red pigment as well. I discovered it as a reproducable trait while breeding White Oak Grey Ratsnakes, and isolated it and enhanced it's visual effect by breeding it into my line of Black Ratsnakes.

So to be honest, I know I said "Axanthic Brindle Black Ratsnakes", but they're not exactly 100% pure. But then again, Brindle Black Ratsnakes originally came from an area in the western part of Georgia, a zone of extensive intergradation. Most Brindle Black Ratsnakes in captivity nowadays look quite different than the ones originally found in Georgia, mostly because of outcrossing to Black Ratsnakes from other areas.

Anyway, I now have 27 good eggs in the incubator, so chances are good.

Herman.

That sounds like a great project, and cant wait to hear about the results and most importantly, see some photographs!

I agree that what we currently see in the market regarding brindles is (or at least can be) very different from what they looked like many years ago.

You mentioned a line of axanthics by Ben Hoiting....... I'm not at all familiar with him or his animals. I only knew of a very small number of axanthic Texas ratsnakes some years ago. To my knowledge, no one is even working on that any longer.
Is Ben's like related to this TX rat line...???

Thanks again for the info Herman.

Byron,

Ben Hoiting's axanthism is not similar to the kind of axanthism you just mentioned. For more info, check out his site on www.cornsnake.nl.

I'll post pictures shortly after their first ecdysis.

Best regards,

Herman.
