Strange..........

vichris Jun 21, 2009 11:29 PM

I witnessed something strange today. One of my midsized turtles today was cruising around the pen when she stopped and picked up in her mouth what appeared to be a white stone. Upon further inspection it turned out to be a peice of bone. She kept chipping away at it and ate most of it in very small peices.

Anyone else ever notice this kind of behavior?

Yes. It's a source of calcium for them. Our cat dropped a dead bunny in the turtle pen one time and the turtles left only a small tuft of fur.

Having dogs and turtles/torts I have seen this often. For some insane reason, every sulcatta that has taken residence up here hunts for the dogs bones when they are out and about!

I think I posted about this last year...but my Eastern juvies ate pea gravel last year, even though I had/have a cuttlebone in their pen. I haven't seen it since then, maybe because I try to offer a lot of calcium into their diets.
