Is it alright to use "used" egg crates (racks)?

rich_123 Sep 14, 2003 05:39 PM

I read in a previous thread of posts that some people use used egg racks. I would prefer not to do this but it would be much easier if it would be alright. Would it be okay to use used egg racks even when they have stains from busted eggs? I would really like to hear about what you guys think.

What I mean by "used" is the egg racks that have been previously used for egg tranportation. Just wanted to make that clear.

I've used egg-contaminated egg-crating from a restaurant's dumpster. I select the ones without too much broken-egg content on them. In my case, I rip/cut out the contaminated areas. This is for my roach colonies. Another method would be to sterilize them by heating in an oven--similar to sterilizing driftwood. Make sure that the temp is around 250 degrees & bake for 15-20 minutes. It's important to keep an eye on the crating to make sure it doesn't smoke or burn. Let it cool afterwards & it should work fine. This eliminates the chance for salmonella or other pathogens.

I use the egg flats from 5-dozen egg pack for my roaches. I don't use any that have stains or egg yolk on them. Those go into the trash...and I always have more than enough. As far as it is safe or not, I don't know. If you feel you rather be on the safest side possible, you can always buy new egg flats.
