Feeding chicks?

TNsnakeman Jun 22, 2009 09:09 PM

I am about to make my next rodent order in a couple of days and I was thinking of buying a couple bags of chicks to give my corn and rat snakes. If I do get some i'll only feed the chicks once a month while feeding mice/rats the rest of the month. Are there any reasons why you would feed chicks? Are there any reasons you would? I have always used rodents but would like to try some chicks if it wont be a problem. Thanks alot.

hey, i am in the same thought process as you right now. i was thinking of ordering some chicks to see how the snakes (and my frog)do with them. I have fed quail on and off for the past 5 years, and the snakes do really well with them, but they are too expensive for me to feed regularly but they are a great supplement. i am pretty sure a few people on the Kingsnake forum feed chicks exclusively.

you may here that the end result is really messy and smelly, but i dont find that with quail, so i cant imagine chicks would be much different.

I feed mine quail fairly regularly. No real reason other than to add a bit of variety to the diet.Snakes that have eaten only rodents their entire lives go NUTS over birds when presented with them. Be prepared for some pretty aggressive feeding responses.

A lot of people shy away from feeding the occasional bird because it is said that snakes that are fed birds poop pretty nasty. The poo is a little bit runnier than with rodents, but it is really not all that bad.

I figure that the snakes could use a little bit of roughage in their diets every now and then.
