Mites and weight loss

nymph Jun 22, 2009 11:55 PM

Hello,

I have two problems. One, one of my red-tailed boas has mites, and I'm unsure what to do about it. Two, my other boa seems to be losing weight for no reason. Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Sorry, correction - its the same snake with mites and weight loss.

Also, its a female boa. She eats well but doesn't like to soak. I soaked her finally and she looks better and acts better, but I'm still worrying about an internal parasite.

What kind of caging is she in?
What temperature do you keep her at?
What substrate do you use?
What size is the snake?
How long have you had her?
Really hard to say with so little information.
Got any pictures?

Thank you for your reply!

Temp - cool side is 75 to 80, warm side is about 90 to 95. She has a basking spot. Substrate is an Aspen with an artificial leaf cover. I've had her for about two weeks.

Any help is much appreciated!

I'm wondering how much I should feed her. I've been feeding her once a week bjt she seems ravenous twice a week. I fed her two pinkies last night.

Depending how long the mites have been around, they could definitely be contributed to the weight loss. The quickest way to get rid of mites is completely cleaning the tank and using Provent-a-mite. Don't put any wood back in the tank. Mites live deep in the wood.

Get rid of the mites and she'll most likely return to normal health quickly.

Pinky mice or pinky rats? If she is not gaining weight and thriving I would go to the vet for a little check up and try to bring a stool sample if you get one. If you don't, the vet may be able to extract one there. Good luck.
