That is one nasty looking wound. How old do you think the wound is and what do you think caused it. They are one tough critter.

I've seen some wounds similar to that on watersnakes in my area that were caused by fish nets. The snake crawls through a dip net and the net gets tight and cuts into the skin.
It's one possibility since the snake was near a large body of water.
