yellow bellied racer

Any one find these in Kingville, Kleberg County area? According to Dixon the range ends near Corpus area. I know snakes know no political boundaries, just thought it was a neat find.

That's technically a Mexican Racer (Coluber constrictor oaxacae) rather than the other subspecies, Yellow-bellied Racer (Coluber constrictor flaviventris).

Supposedly the black skin and black speckling are distinctive in this subspecies, but they do intergrade with Yellow-bellieds further up the coast.

Both subspecies have yellow bellies.

It is a cool find, either way. I don't think I've ever seen a Coluber in south Texas other than a single DOR near Freer.

I did see that in the book as well, the Mexican racer would be the logical choice by locality alone. i didn't realize that the Mexican racer had such a yellow tummy. thanks for the reply.

I'm with Chris on this one wolfpack, but oaxacans are a neat find any day! They are pretty abundant here in Corpus but difficult to catch, lol! I personally have not seen a yellowbwlly here in Nueces, but saw a hawk attack one in Refugio county, it dropped it when I got too close for a pic, but the hawk already hammered it.
