Super Black Pastels

RegiusCo Jun 24, 2009 10:28 AM

We couldn't be happier, so far they all look great. The Super Blacks are amazing and the Black Pastels are classic!

Well this was like the longest wait ever, but well worth it, These guys finally decided to come of their eggs today.

Here they are with their Black Pastel brothers & sisters,

As far as we can tell the snouts/noses are perfectly formed, when looking at the shape of the head it's no different than those of the siblings. If they do seem to appear a little different it's probably do to the way the light is refracted off those shiny blackish/blue scales in and around their mouth, nostrils and the missing eye band, it is worth noting that this is a brand new strain we imported and been working with since 2002.

Here is group shot of the Supers,

Thanks

Those are very nice!!! Congrats!

I love that they have completely normal looking snouts. And no brown spots, either. What was the sex of the supers?

Yes, congrats, very nice.

Also, how many total homozygous have hatched from this line and have any had the snout or kinking problems seen sometimes with other lines? Are you trying anything special with incubation or diet to avoid that?

bristen Jun 24, 2009 01:41 PM

I believe their secret is that they stumbled on a new line of Black Pastels. It's possible their line will not have the problems that some other lines have had in the past. I'm not sure they are ready to make that claim yet, but I personally think that must be at least part of the reason they appear to have normal snouts. Black pastels from this line appear to be very nice examples as well.

Regards,
Bristen.

If they are 3 for 3 that would certainly be a good start. More from different clutches with no duck bills or kinks would be even better.

jayefbe Jun 24, 2009 10:03 PM

I gotta think that no black pastel/ cinny line is ever going to consistently produce supers without the duckbilling. There have been a number of black pastels and cinny lines imported over the years (Graziani, BHB, Gulf Coast, this one, Ian G's) and I've yet to hear of one that has proven to lack the duckbilling. Hopefully one day, but I'm guessing it's inherent within the mutation.

bristen Jun 24, 2009 10:44 PM

good point, I've also heard about this but had forgotten about it... many lines do in fact exist, and from what I understand, the supers (and crossed supers) do tend to have the duck bills... hopefully this line proves that it will be possible to have a black ball python without the bill!

Regards,
Bristen.

I suppose one can hope that this one is a slightly different mutation without whatever makes the duckbill and kinking.

RandyRemington Jun 24, 2009 11:25 PM

But if just one clutch could also be some difference in incubation or feeding that would have counteracted the tendency for problems in any line.
