How much is too much?

timmah Jun 24, 2009 03:16 PM

I let my new baby ball sit for 2 days and today i fed him one hopper, he ate it, then he seemed like he was searching for more, so i got another hopper and before i even got it all the way in his cage he snatched it up, yet again after he swallowed that one he was searching for another and i put another hopper in there and he grabbed it right away. He was born about 3 months ago so hes pretty small ball. Is 3 too much? or wil they stop eating when they are full. I hear all this stuff about balls not eating and this dude ravages frozen hoppers like nothing.

My opinion is that i may need to get adult mice, but yet im super new to snakes, im used to lizards not over eating.

Hes a snapper too, i can hold him fine as long as i keep my other hand away from him, i was talking to a friend yesterday about how they don't usualy bite and about 5 seconds later he had ahold of my finger, because i was pointing with the other finger (ima hand movement talker) at the snake talking about how docile he is. pretty funny imo and my friend ran out of the room while my finger was bleeding, they have quite a bite even as babies. Not as bad as a bearded dragon though (trying to hand feed):P or my sav monitor.

Multiple meals are fine....ideally you'd give them 1 food item that will leave a bulge in his/her belly....not a huge bulge but you want to be able to tell that it ate. If you feed just 1 hopper and a few minutes later you can't even tell it ate anything then you can increase the size of the food.

I give my newborns hopper mice so you should be on adult mice at this point with a 3 month old....though it all depends on the size of the individual animal.

Hoppers seem the right size for him, i got 2 from the same batch and the one that eats 3 is significantly bigger than his brothers. The other one won't even eat yet

At 3 months you can certainly move up from hoppers onto something bigger.

As far as if it's too much -- if you still see a sizable lump in him after 24 hours it probably is - after 48 hours you might be in for some problems -- if they don't digest it before it decomposes it can rot inside of them and potentially kill them. Keep him warm it will help in the digestion.

Good luck.

Well i ordered 200 large mice, since hoppers seem to be not enough at all, i skipped the weaned size. so i hope he can eat the large mice.
