Breeding Question - Cal Kings

wizbang Jun 24, 2009 04:43 PM

I have recently purchased a 3yr old male California King.

I also own a 3yr old female California King.

The female was cooled during winter and warmed up starting in March. She has been eating great and has shed twice. After the second shed she became very active. I wonder/assume that she was ready to mate at this time. I do not know this for sure. The second shed was several weeks ago.

I got the male last Saturday and for grins I put the female in with him. I observed to make sure one didn't decide to eat the other.

He was very interested in mating. She was not. He held on for 20 or 30 mins but they never got together so to speak.

My question is if there is any chance that the female could come back into season this year or if I'll need to wait until after the next cooling period?

I've read about two clutches in a year so that is why I ask but I don't know if a second ovluation occures if there was no breeding during the first one.

I'm in no hurry but was just curious.

You may have missed your window for this year. You could try feeding the female heavily for a week or two and then trying again. If they don't go for it then I wold just wait.

Thanks for the response.

I think I'll just wait. Focus on building them both up for a healthy batch next Spring.
