Not eating Kale

garth_905 Jun 25, 2009 11:08 AM

hey normally my bearded dragon will eat the kale but today i tried sprinkling some shreded sweet potatoe on it. I put out the food at 9:30 and its 12 now..should i be alarmed.

Since he is shedding could that be causing him to not be hungry?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks a lot.

Kale should not be a staple green for dragons. It is fine mixed up with other healthy greens once in awhile, couple times a month say, but not every day. Though Kale has alot of calcium it also has components that bind the calcium which makes it unusuable. I suggest looking at the nutrient chart at the following website to choose more healthier salads for your dragon.

It is the oxalate content in greens that binds calcium and kale has one of the lowest oxalate levels of all the most commonly used greens. This site has the numbers taken from the analysis done by the Dept. of Agriculture. http://www.anapsid.org/iguana/cal_ox.html

Kale is goitrogenic so it should be varied with non-Brassica greens to avoid thyroid problems. Collard greens and mustard greens are also goitrogenic.
