I want to know the sex of my ribbon snake & y he doesn't eat worms

woody189 Sep 14, 2003 08:23 PM

i've had my snake for like 2 or 3 months. i have no clue if its a guy or girl. i read someone elses reply to the same question and they told him to get a probing thing. i have no clue how to do that or how much it is, and shoving a pole in my snake isn't sumthing either one of us is going to enjoy. is there another way. also, its a real pain to go to the pet store all the time to get fish, so i want to feed em some stuff that wont die. i want to get em land stuff, but he wont eat crickets or worms. he's not even close to big enough to eat mice. hes pretty hungry now cuz i havnt fed em in a while so im gonna get em sum cricets and worms to see if he'll eat em while hes starving. i'm not even sure if he can catch them, so pleacse tell me if northern ribbon snaeks are capable of catching worms and crickets, and if they are, ist there any way to get him to eat them, even though he doesn't want it.
thanks

As for sex, most experience herpers could tell you by looking at the underside of the tail. Generally, if the snake has a longer tail that tapers off gradually after bulging just past the vent, it is a male. Probing, if done correctly, is painless and very accurate. Just get someone else to probe the snake for you. As for feeding, how large is it? Is it too small for pinky mice? Andy

my snake is pretty hungry, because i havn't fed him in a while. i did this, so i could buy worms and put them in the cage. i put them in a dish, and i figure if he's ever going to eat them, it'll be when he's starving. if he doesn't, then i'll take em back to his all fish diet. the snake is long and slender, he can easily eat a large rosy red fish, but i'm not sure if he could eat much bigger.. as for whether or not it can eat pinky mice, i'm not sure, because i don't know the size of them. if he cuold physically eat them, i'm not sure he would because he doesn't eat any otehr land animals. on the other hand, the mouse may move more, attracting the snake, thus attracting him to catch it.
thanks a lot
