OT - Part II (with pics!)

Ha! The little bastard came back. I went into my shed just a few hours after placing the garter snake in the garden and I found him in another mouse cage. This time, he had a mouse in his mouth. No constriction. The mouse was thrashing about a bit. I thought I'd try and save the mouse so I opened up the cage and pulled the snake out. He didn't let go of the mouse. I put him in a bucket. He had the mouse's head in his mouth. Withing several seconds, the mouse stopped thrashing so i let him finish his meal.

This little guy has obviously learned where the easy meals are. Until I figure out how to solve the problem, he's going to be residing comfortably in my snake room.

That's classic!!!
I never would have guessed that a garter snake would eat mice, let alone keep going back.

he knows where a good source of food is so why would he leave? Only way to keep him from coming back is to move him much further away. Be glad garter snakes don't 'raise' their young, else you would have a whole bunch of them in your shed eating all your mice!

Very nice looking garter snake though

... as a pet. He obviously likes you.

Thanks,

Wow! That is pretty cool, even though you lost a few feeders out of the deal. Perhaps relocate him several miles away? Think he'd find his way back? Beautiful snake!

I'm definitely not keeping him. As pretty as he is, garter snakes just arent on my "to do" list. I do like having him around though so I think he'll go right back into the garden. I really don't mind if he helps himself to a mouse now and then. My only worry is that after he eats, he's too big to leave the mouse cage. I'm afraid the other mice in the cage will eat him!

Mike,
...I have been to several rodent breeding places in Florida where they had Cornsnakes and Yellow Ratsnakes in the rafters above the rodents just waiting for escapees. I have had Copperheads in my garage a couple of times and they are probably coming in because of the rat smell. I consider this a bonus of the rat operation but my wife just doesn't see it that way.
