Rat Mom is really interesting to watch.

markru Jun 28, 2009 12:59 AM

Hello,

We went down to check on our rats before bed. We looked in on the mom with 11 pups. She was in the front eating block. We could not see the pups anywhere. She took wood shavings and completely covered the nest so it looked like a uniform layer of wood shavings in the back. What a cool thing to see. She was totally trying to conceal her babies from us while she ate.

Thanks for reading,
Mark

As they become familiar with you and yours assuming the weather is comfortable they will do that less and less.

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying your Rat colony as much as your snakes are...LOL

It would be nice to see pics every now and then...

Cheers

Hi,

The pics of what I saw last night would have been an even layer of wood chips covering the babies. Pretty boring. I took some nice pics today and I will post later. Off to church right now. The babies born on the 26th now have color to there bodies. The ones with no color, they are totally pink mean they could be albinos? Or even just one solid color? Anyway, I have at least 5 or 6 hooded ones. And yes we are enjoying the rats. We just love working with any animal and take a lot of pride in doing it right. I don't think the businesses selling rats have anything to worry about. We are just so happy to be in control of our own rat production. I hated dealing with frozen rats. It was a pain in the azz. Anyone on here knows what I mean if they think back to when they started to breed their own food source as well. I am not going to miss that quarterly phone call with my credit card in hand. And then preying that they send me the rats on the heavy end of their weight charts which they never did. I always got the lower end of the weights on the charted index. Good riddance frozen rat breeders. I never understood how you could get frozen rats to breed anyway. What a weird breed of rat....LOL.

The lighter colored hooded and regular rats tend to stay pink longer. Gray is a bit slower but Black is Bam...dun!

I breed my own and purchase frozen...it takes weeks to get the XL rats. With my small colony can't get enough.

I do freeze surplus rats that I breed.

So I don't know what problem you have with frozen but for me its a fact of the hobby. I need frozen....

Hi,

I am just glad I wont have to order 350.00 dollars worth of frozen rats every 3 months anymore. I have made some contacts on where I can buy live for backup if I run out. I will freeze extra as well. I just hated thawing 15 rats a week. Anyway thanks for the help again. I have taken pics but I need to upload.

Thanks,
Mark

I thaw about twenty...and it is nice not seeing a $400 payment.

I'll try and get some pics of my rack today as its supposed to be cleaning day...

Cheers
