a few questions.. feeding and pairing

bigkahunas4 Sep 14, 2003 08:43 PM

it has been a while since i have posted, but when i did post it was a of a lot of help, which is probably why i haven't posted.

I've had my gecko for about 4 months now, got it at as a baby. It's in a 10 gallon tank, and I was interested in pairing (not for breeding) it with another gecko. I was wondering how to determine the sex of the gecko as I have heard it's better not to keep males with other males. So that is one question.. the other has to do with feeding. I had been feeding him 5-7 mealworms a day. But recently he has been coming out more and hanging by his dish, so I put in another set of 5 which he gobbles up no problem. Should I be increasing how much I feed him? Should I feed him more than one time? What is the normal amount of feed? Also other than worms and crickets is there anything else I can feed him, such as vegetables?

Sorry for the length, but thanks in advance for the feedback

I am kind of new to this myself, but I can offer some help. It is difficult, if not impossible to sex baby geckos. I got my two youngest geckos Boo and Popeye when they were really young. I still am not quite sure what sex they are, and they're approx. five months old now. If you want to get a buddy for your little one, I would suggest getting a bigger tank. I believe you said that the one you have now is in a ten gallon, correct? Popeye and boo were kep in a ten gallon, until about two months ago. They were starting to bite each other, and just basically not getting along. I thought it was because they were both males, but I decided to try a bigger cage. I left them both together and kept a close eye on them, I havn't had any problems since. I think that they were just overcrowded. To make a long story short, my advice is if you want two in the same cage I would go for a 20 gallon. That's what mine are in. As for feeding, I was really unsure about that too. I feed mine as much as they want, they usually lose interest when they are full. I am not sure if all geckos are like that however. Hopefully someone else can be of more help about the feeding aspect. Hope this helps you out some.
