Help getting a ball to eat.

math85 Jun 28, 2009 05:52 PM

Against better judgment I recently bought a Ball Python at a pet store. She looks to be close to a year old, but refuses to eat anything. The pet store rep didn't know when they last ate and was unsure when they were even brought there (I had browsed about a week before my purchase). It's now been 3 weeks and she refuses to eat. I've offered frozen pinkies, live pinkies, & live fuzzies but she just shies away and ignores the food. She has been very nervous and was initially brought in with a shipment of ~60. She was housed with about 15 others in a small 10 gal enclosure.

I tried to feed her the first time because she was very then around the upper torso. I have since tried the various different feeder types, and kept up to make sure her humidity and temperature are okay. She has started to come out a little more since I've introduced another male ball about her size to the terranium, but she still won't eat and her scales are starting to become loose. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

She's new and can be getting used to her environment, at her age she could also be going through a fast. Coming from a pet store god only knows what kind of problem you've adopted.

Take the male out of the cage -- balls should not be housed together. Especially if they aren't feeding well.

The food items that you list that you are offering are inappropriate for a one year old ball (for comparison a ball hatchling can eat a small adult mouse for it's first meal).

You'll want to fix your husbandry and then you'll want to find an appropriate size feeders. In the mean time leave her alone and make sure she has fresh water.

Good luck.

First, you could try double checking all of your cage conditions:
Warm spot of about 90 degrees F.
Cool end of about 80 degrees F.
~50% humidity.
At least two hides, one on the cool and one on the warm end.
Clean water on the cool end of the cage.

Food items for a ball python should be as big around as the widest part of the snake's body. Try an adult mouse or rat pup, if that would be appropriate.

It might be best to not bother her at all unless you are trying to feed. With all my new ones I have tried feeding every three days. If they don't take, try again in three days.
