Arizona herping

kevin Sep 14, 2003 08:49 PM

Hi,
i am planning on goin to AZ for a 2 week herping trip, primarily hoping to find some rattlers, lyres or anything really.
i have some questions as i havnt benn to AZ for many years now and never went primaily to herp.
What is the weather and temps like in the winter like in November, december and january. Thats when i was thinking of going. i was going to the very south west part.
are these good times to herp?
Does anyone have any specific places that are good?
whats the best time to look, best time to go road cruising?
one species are mostly abundant.
thanks
Kevin

You might have better luck asking at the field collecting forum, although those folks can be tougher than even this room LOL...

Jaffo would be a good person to contact, or Jerry Feldner.... there are a lot of people over there with a great deal of knowledge that they may be willing to share...

Field collecting in AZ can be fun, but make sure you obtain your hunting license, and realize that the State of AZ does not allow collection for commercial purposes. Study the hunting license regs carefully as there are small limits placed on most species, and several are protected from collection.
As far as timing, you are better off road hunting in either the late spring or early fall, if you are going to be there during the winter months, you will best spend your time "flipping" but make sure you take the time to replace any habitat you disturb.
AZ is a big state with a diverse selection of Biomes as well as taxa. That said, geographic location of areas you are wanting to hunt will play a factor as to whether or not you will want to pursue field collection at all during the winter months.
Hope that helps....

Well road cruising winds down in about 2 weeks. But in November you could still have some luck with the roads. Shoot me an email and maybe we can hook up when ya get down here.
