New alterna enclosure

crestedcrazy Jun 28, 2009 08:49 PM

I've been building this cage for a month now and finally finished and thought I would share. The rock work is not as detailed as the rock wall posted earlier but it is functional for my grayband. It was my first attempt building a rock wall. The cage is 4ft tall by 3ft. wide and 2ft. deep. It is now home to my 277 male. Chris Drake

Very very nice. I've just started looking into using polyurethane, the foam they use for surfboards. You can but the mix to make it and it might "mold" well but if not it carves easily. Seems kind of expensive though, about $65 for 4 cubic feet. Anyone know where to get ready made blocks of it?

It looks great! I always talk about setting up a naturalistic enclosure for snakes in my collection, but never actually do it! I've done rock work using cement on zoo exhibits in the past, but that wouldn't be practical at home. Maybe I could give this a try someday...

Thanks guys for the kind words. It was fun to build and I really enjoyed watching him use the rockwork last night. I wish it looked as good as the suboc enclosure at the Houston Zoo. Andrew knows the one i'm talking about. I believe theres a pic of it in Dustys suboc book. It's been home to lepidus and then subocs in the past. About time to throw some alterna in there. Here's a photo in the Wikipedia commons of the enclosure at Houston:

Unfortunately, that exhibit has been broken down. Several old timers took credit for creating in in the late 70's - early 80's. I think it was Robert Hubbard that actually broke ground on it. The patternless lepidus that graced the cover of Tennant's field guide once lived in there. God knows what else over the years! It was neat to stand in front of it and dream about alterna land...

That sucks! I didn't know they took it down. That was in my opinion the best setup there. Chris Drake

Very cool and functional. I especially like the surface texture that you were able to create. Congrats on a job well done.
