Anorexic Pastel Clutch

rsherman79 Jun 29, 2009 09:31 AM

This Pastel went on a hunger strike for 1.5 years. She didn't take one meal and lost about 600 grams in the process. Last season she finally decided she was hungry and started chowing down.

This season we paired her with a Bumblebee and she locked up every time. We awoke this morning to find her on top of a clutch of 8 perfect eggs. So the next time your snake doesn't eat for a few months, just have a little faith and A LOT of patience!

almost 6 months. with snakes like that you need to find a pet project to keep your mind off them.

I have a male pastel that went 15 months without eating. He's my best breeder now.

Hey Ryan, Cool to see the picture of her on her healthy clutch of eggs after hearing about her from you this morning. Sh looks great and I am sure you will defeat the odds gods on this one too....lol. After you told me about your last clutch's odds you have to be one of the luckiest breeders in town. Cant wait to put that beautiful little LemonBlast to my Bee this next year or so. Have a great rest of the season Ryan, Jay from Sunny AZ.

hey Ryan,Congratulations on the clutch..and i wish you the best of luck on the final outcome.

As bad as i'de hate to admit it.I recognize that girl.I had to go and look at some old pics, but that's the one you got from me..I'm astonished to hear that she went off feed at all.Let alone for that long!As she never refused a rat when she was here(from 130 to 1700? grams)...

Wonder what set her off feed like that?..because as good as she ate here,it makes me think that something as simple as climate change from one side of the county to the other can obviously have devastating results...?

She was a voracious eater when I first got her and then the winter came and I just figured she was off feed for the winter, only she didn't resume for almost 18 months. I tried everything including mice, gerbils, ASF, rats, frozen, live and every little trick you hear about. I even had my vet give her a complete inspection.

It's like the Barkers say "Happy, healthy ball pythons always eat when they are hungy." Now she is one of the best eaters and a fantastic specimen at that. Can't complain about 8 perfect eggs. Now if I find a Killer Bee in that clutch I really won't have anything to complain about!

Wow...that is a long fast. I have a female that weighs 2500 grams that has not eaten for one whole year at this point. She lives in her water bowl. All her conditions are ideal. She bred once when I purchased her and has mislead me for the last year as to what she is doing. She just had a shed and I'm hoping she will begin eating again soon, though she refused my first attempt. Hope all turns out with that nice clutch.

I have had a female go 12 months with no food. She then took off and she's actually gravid now. Ball Pythons can be a real challenge... many people go nuts trying to get a snake to eat when it's fasting. Fact is they will eat when they are good and ready.

Good luck with the clutch...
