There are only two holes drilled in the box, one in each end, and they are small. If you're anything like me, you'll open the box at least once a week to check on the eggs. This provides sufficient air flow. You will definately need a lid, and it's not a bad idea to cut a piece of plastic sheeting to fit between the box and the lid to form a tight seal. (I don't know if it's plainly visible or not, but the box in the photo that has eggs in it has the piece of plastic between the lid and box. You have no humidity worries with this set up)

The basic idea of an egg box is to have a completely enclosed environment so that the humidity will remain at 100%. So yes, you'll want a tight-fitting lid, some damp substrate, an external heat supply, and NO holes. Holes (regardless of how small or how few) will compromise you goal of maintaining 100% humidity. To offset "stale air" open the bin once every couple of days and "wave" in some fresh air. Presto. Done!
Nex time, horse before the cart to avoid all this last minute running around and compromising the eggs.
Good luck.

I use a plastic shoe box with a snapping lid with NO holes and I put ( PRESS-N-SEAL ) on before I put the lid on!!! I also use egg crating with water and no substrate...100% humidity every time...GOOD LUCK Bob

do you open the boxes up once and a while, or you don't touch them until they hatch?

Hi,

If you have loose single eggs how do you keep them from rolling around on the egg crate? This box will work for Ball Python eggs right? This looks so awesome why would anyone screw around with vermiculite with this method if it works well?

Thanks,
Bill

I took zip ties and attatched them to the grating so that the "tag" end of them sticks up. They are positioned so that the eggs just barely fit between them when set down on the grating. This seems to do a good job of preventing loose eggs from rolling. I used to use vermiculite until I lost an entire clutch earlier in the season. I went out and bought all the stuff to make these boxes, and it seems to be working well.

Hi,

I remember your post on the pastel clutch you lost. That totally sucks. Thanks for the tip on the zip ties. I will definitely try that method. It sounds too like you can take the top egg crate with the eggs and weigh them with out even touching them. That is cool. Thanks for sharing.

I don't want anyone to misread what I said and think I actually zip tied the eggs to the crate

Duct tape or Crazy Glue.

Mykee, tell me this is one of your witty jokes, right? I would never dare use either on eggs... for rolling eggs, I stuff dry (or slightly damp, but not wet) moss under the eggs... works great and zero risk for the eggs...
