Yellow Rat on side of house

MikeMurphy Jun 30, 2009 09:37 AM

While I was trying to trick my Australian Shepherd into coming outside to go to the bathroom (the grass was wet and she hates getting her feet wet)I saw this yellow rat snakes at the top of a pole used to hang plants from. This was on the side of the house. It's amazing how he got up that pole. It was away from the wall and is just a slick metal pole all the way up.

I've seen a few yellow rats in my yard over the years. There are lots of big oaks in the neighborhood and "natural" areas. The last one I saw was a hatchling on the sidewalk in front of my house constricting a brown anole. The adults that I've seen all tend to look a bit skinny. There are squirrels (nests everywhere) all over the place and lizards and treefrogs for the hatchlings.

I live in Casselberry, which is northeast of Orlando.

Cool pics of a beautiful snake!

Yeah, I never get tired of yellows even after catching so many as a kid. They are just so cool looking. I love the heads and eyes. It's really cool that in suburbia, where I live, with all the rampant destruction of nature, I can still see a few snakes here and there right in my own yard. Besides the yellows, I've seen garter snakes, ringneck snakes, and one coral snake.

I hear ya buddy. I'm the same way and live in overbuilt South Florida and still love it when I see something as common as a black racer cruising the yard.

Nice find for sure!! Here in S. Louisiana we see Texas Rats. Never found one in my yard, but I have found brown snakes and a black racer along with an occassional redeared slider from the nearby neighborhood lake!! I bet those yellows also give the birds a good time in your neighborhood along with whatever rats and mice lurk around!!!

Yep, true. There are quite a few birds. Haven't actually seen any rats or mice but I'm sure there are some. We also have quite a few black racers in the area. Even found a clutch of racer eggs in one of the planters around the pool.
