Someone from one of these organizations needs to have a statement ready and read over the local and national news channels when something like this happens. There's always one idiot who screws it up for everyone.
As far as the 2 year old goes, I can't imagine the horrible death she had, and it is a rotten shame. God bless her and her family.
I feel sorry for the little girl that lost her life due to this incident.
But, I do not believe that this should add fuel to the fire of HR 669. If you read the article at the end it advised that Florida residence must have a permit to keep Burmese Pythons, and the Wildlife office showed no permits for any one that lived there. The people were already breaking the law by not having the permits.
Almost 99 percent of us in the reptile community are responsible owners, but there is always that 1 percent that ruins everything.

This is why I hesitate to tell people that snakes of any kind are "harmless". I usually tell them they are just as harmless as dogs and cats. Most of the time they are friendly, docile pets. But the wrong animal, or in the hands of a bad owner, or both, and you have a tragedy.
It would be fascinating to include a Herpetologist in the investigation of that child's death to find out if that man should be prosecuted for negligence. Or to examine the snake to see when it had last eaten and if the enclosure it was kept in was appropriate.

While I'm not for adding fuel to the fire...
dogs aren't harmless dude. A dog will mess you up faster than a snake could any day.

Damn it all. What a tragedy.

Sounds like BS to me. I seriously doubt the snake killed the little girl. Andrew
How do we know the snake even killed her 100%? Unfortunately, there are more psychos out there than bad snake keepers. The guy coulda got pissed, beat the poor girl to death and then used the snake as an allebye (I can't spell!!! LOL).
Just a thought. Either way still a tragedy.
Let me start by saying that any childs death is tragic and very sad.
But I am also very suspicious about the veracity of this story. I agree it could happen but it is not likely. I would not be surprised if the childs death WAS due to a person and not a snake.
