Need help with Pewter Genetics

SlytherLyn Jul 02, 2009 06:22 AM

Hello, I'm still new to BPs, have had a small snake collection since the mid 90s which has consisted mainly of Corns, Milks, Kings, Hognoses, and Bulls, with the occasional Boa and Carpet Python. But only last year got bit by the BP bug. Wanted to get just one nice morph to add to my collection as a pet. Picked up a male Mojave at a show last year who quickly became my favorite snake in the collection.

Last week I went to a local reptile store to pick up a female Mojave to go with him. While I was there one of the owners brought out a female Pewter to show me. I made the mistake of holding her. Talk about love at first sight. I'd never seen a Pewter before and thought she was beautiful, and she has a super sweet personality on top of it. So now I ended up walking out with both the female Mojo and the female Pewter.

I don't really want to breed the Pewter to my Mojave so I am looking into getting an unrelated male Pewter to go along with her. I see other BP owners keep more than one female per male, so this now brings me to my reason for posting since I'm curious what other females to get.

Could someone verify possible morphs resulting in a Pewter x Pewter breeding? I've found various info on different sites and some was conflicting. From what I read I came up with: Normals, Cinnamons, Super Cinnamons, Pastels, Super Pastels, Pewters, and Super Pewters. Is this correct? I tried looking up Super Pewter and couldn't find much info. I found one picture of a baby. No pictures of adults. Does anyone have a picture of an adult Super Pewter?

I will be getting a female Cinnamon from a friend of mine later in the year. What morphs would you get crossing a Pewter x Cinnamon?

I was also thinking of getting a Spider female. What would you get if you did a Spider x Pewter?

I found something called a Silver Bullet and it said to mix a Pewter Pastel with a Pastel Jungle. Is a Pewter Pastel something different than what I bought? Is a Pastel Jungle just a regular Pastel? At the store they have some Pastels that are sisters to my Pewter and they are drop dead gorgeous. I'd like to get one and was wondering if that would work for shooting for Silver Bullets?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm excited about my new girl and the possibilities I can get once I find a male.

If anyone has any other suggestions to pair with a Pewter male that I haven't listed, please let me know. Thanks so much!!!

I'll try to attach a picture of my Pewter. I named her Bellatrix.

hat is a beautiful pewter.

Now to do my best to answer your genetic questions. The results that you have listed are all possibilities for the pewter x pewter pairing. You also need to add to the list silver streak and silver bullet.

Possible outcomes of a pewter x cinnamon would be normals, pastels, cinnamons, silver bullets, super cinnamons, and pewters.

Spider pewter crossing would give you the possibility of getting normals, spiders, pewters, pastels spiders (I believe these AKA bee), cinnamon spiders, and pewter spiders.

I have seen conflicting information on the silver bullet and what makes it but here is my best explanation. A silver bullet has 2 copies of the cinnamon gene and 1 copy of the pastel gene. So to create would need a cinnamon for your pewter. A pastel and pewter can give you a silver streak which is 2 copies of the pastel gene and 1 copy of the cinnamon.

Pastel jungles are just typically referred to as pastels now. The jungle has been dropped. Same goes for the pewter pastels are mostly referred to simply as pewter.

As for any other suggestions for pairing, go with what you like.
The NERD website has some good pictures of different morphs.

Thank you very much, I'm thinking instead of a normal spider female maybe I should invest in a Bumblebee instead?

Pewter x Bumblebee would give me the benefits of the Pewter x Spider plus the benefits of a Pewter x Pastel but I could also possibly get Super Pastel Spiders. I think those are Killer Bees? I've seen pictures of those and they are very pretty.

So my group would be male Pewter, female Pewter, female Bumblebee, female Cinnamon, and female Pastel. Or is 4 females too many for 1 male? I don't know what the common ratio is for males to females. I could skip the Pastel I guess if it's too many females.

I can see how this could get addicting. I don't want to get crazy into it. Don't have the room or the money. But I'm just loving the Balls I already have, more so than I've ever loved any other type of snake I've kept over the years. Just something about them. It's easier to have them out when I'm surfing the net or watching TV. I often bring out one of my Corns or Kings but they keep moving so fast and wanting to dive into the couch cushions and never just relax. But the Balls are easier to have out. They do explore, but not as fast as the Colubrids. And quite often after they have explored, they will curl up in my lap or under my hair if I'm leaning back in the recliner, and just chill out. Kind of the 'lap dogs' of the snake world. I like that.

I'll start looking into Bumble Bees and will post a picture if I'm able to get one. I'm not crazy about having high end snakes shipped so I'm hoping I can get one locally.

I chose to go with a male Pewter to go with my female Pewter. I put a deposit on him today. I also picked up a female Pastel and decided to go for it and get a female Bumble Bee rather than a female Spider. Here is my new Bumble Bee...
