>>Hello. It is my first post here. I was wondering, whad difference is between V. Berus and v. aspis. I saw both this species on photos ( both, aspis and berus was black )and I couldn't find any difference. Could You share with some usefull informations and links? Greetings
You should probably post this on the venomous forums since there are a number of Vipera people there.
V. aspis is smaller and slightly more slender than V. berus and V. aspis tends to have a different pattern. The crossbars are more zigzag-shaped in berus, more like a line with crossbars ini aspis, and the pattern can be very reduced in aspis. Of course the both vary including both coming in black phases. There are some individuals that take more experience to differentiate.
But you are correct, many of the Vipera species are similar at first glance and without experience. Of course, their ranges don't everlap much.
