dropping tails

ninj726 Jul 03, 2009 12:04 PM

so I know geckos can drop their tails, and I've seen it happen. I'm not sure if anyone here knows the answer to my question, but here it goes. How do geckos actually drop their tails without doing any exterior damage to their tails? What is the internal mechanism that actually separates the tail from the body? Thanks for helping me ease my curiosity.

I have never seen it happen, but I think it must be a special muscle near the base of the tail that squeezes.

I am not sure I understand that part of your question. If he/she drops their tail its damaged, its gone. The regrown one wont look like the original one.

I meant that they do not bite or scratch their tails to get them to fall off, I want to know if anyone knows what internal mechanism they use to cause them to fall off.
