High Sierra Garter

paulbuck Sep 14, 2003 10:57 PM

I found this Garter snake (Common?) at about 9500' in the Southern Sierra Nevada. It was at Grizzly Lake in the Monarch Wilderness. The time was about 6:30 am and the temps in the 50's. Length about 12-15 in. My field guide has the max elevation at 8000' for the Common and Western Aquatic.

Paul:
From your photograph, I suggest that the species you found is Thamnophis elegans elegans or Mountain Garter Snake. I believe T. elegans has been documented well above 10,000 in parts
of its distribution.
