BP Group Housing Question

rideswater Jul 04, 2009 09:52 AM

This question relates to housing BP of different sizes in the same cage.

I have a very large glass enclosure that I currently have a 9 month old BP in. He is healthy by all visibly recognizable accounts.

I was recently given a 2 year old, most likely female, BP. I currently have her housed separately in a slightly smaller container. I want to watch her closely for about 30 days. She came from an awesome handler, but I am always cautious.

The large glass enclosure with the smaller BP is currently located in a natural themed room in our home. It stays warm, well lit, and humid. I would really like to introduce the 2nd BP to this environment. Ideally, I would want to house it with my male. I do not intend or have hopes for breeding.

Does anyone see any problems with housing a 2 year old BP with a 9 month old? The 9 month old is strong, but I guess I still have concerns about smothering. Maybe they are unfounded.

What do you think? Would anyone care to share their story of doing something similar?

Fred

They shouldn't be housed together. I am sure that some of the better authorities in the BP community will post the same. It is stressful to the animals and may lead to not eating, etc.

There's just too many issues with group housing.
Fighting over hides, disease spreading if one is sick, accidental breedings (including at the wrong age.)

I've never done it with BPs but it's not a great idea. I did this once with Rosy Boas and after about 5 months of co-ed I found my smaller snake dead. I wasn't exactly sure how she had died, but smothering was my first thought.

you can do it....balls live in groups, you think every one has it's own personal hide or termite mound in Africa?...they share, unlike people...

...remember,,,,,9 month old males breed , 2 year old females breed......do the math.......?...they also will grab the same prey if you just throw one in there....

....they also stop eating if you move them, or look at them or wave to them or think of them or look at a picture of them....god luck, .......keep them eating....
