lissag25 Sep 15, 2003 02:19 AM

has anyone noticed a significant weight increase in your beardie once you started feeding salad and pellets everyday and live prey(silkies, crix, and supers) every two days..then reason i ask is because spike was off of pellets for a little over two months because of a fruitfly invasion and i started feeding him pellets again at the end of august and from august 24th to today he has gianed 43 grams...he wasn't too thin before and i don't think he is two fat now.. wieghing in at 365 at 16"short for a two year old)..anyone else have any ideas why he gained so much wieght..

thanks

sounds like he is a good eater i would lay off the supers, keep giving everything else the way you are, if he gains weight on that diet and you think he is too heavy you can give less live feeders, he could be getting ready to brumate, mine eat like real pigs a few weeks before and then stop altogether, they usually will even gain weight while asleep too. anyhow his weight for his length seems fine to me, better a little plump then a little skinny.

he only gets supers as treats like 3 or 4 every other week..(he used to get them every couple of days as a staple feeder) and i figured it was about time for him to burmate..but man did he pack on the wieght these past couple of weeks.. what a lil heffer... but i have noticed that when i feed pellets and a salad and live prey most of my beardies gain the wieght pretty quickly.. versus without pellets.

Consider yourself lucky!! As long as the dragon is active, not eating to many fatty foods, and is putting on such weight that is super. If he starts getting lazy and over weight and not growing in length as well, definitely cut back on the supers or fatty foods. Dragons should be BIG. Most dragons these days are actually tiny compared to the dragons of five-ten years ago. Back then it was a common occurrence to see a 20-24inch 550-600 gram dragons. Now seems 16-18 is considered large these days. I have one male at a little over a year old and is still growing. My male Foster is in no way an over weight obese dragon. He is active, eats live foods maybe twice a week and still grows. He is finally slowing down now at 23 inches and 765 grams. Vets are amazed that with all the inbreeding and diminished sized dragons I have one of such large proportions that checks out healthy every 6 months. I was scared at first cause he was so big. Really it's a blessing with today's 330 gram 16 inch breeders it's really sad. What does the future hold 14 inch adult breeders =( Be proud, and at the same time safe. If he seems to be slowing down with the added weight. His frame was not meant to hold it. Foster on the other hand is huge all over. Head is 4 inches from point to point, and tail base is like a frying pan. Take a look at the pic it's not all tummy fat. I hope to breed him next year to another 21 inch 575 gram orange female. I hope people still want large dragons!! I know that's one of the first things I look for in babies the size. and health and vigor of the parents, and of course different bloodlines. Color is a bonus when I pick the way I see it. Here is a pic of both of them Foster and Sweet Candy.

Foster front of pic big meat head, and sweet Candy back of Foster
