'Wrinkled' eyes

simon appleby Sep 15, 2003 02:30 AM

My BP shed recently and as far as I could see, fully - there were definitely eye caps on the head section of the shed. Now, about two weeks later, I have noticed that the surface of its eyes look a bit wrinkly, whereas they looked fine immediately after the shed. Is this a sign that the humidity is too low? I have the water dish over the heat mat, and it's big enough for him/her to soak if necessary, but I do not have a hygrometer at the moment to measure the humidity in the viv (tho I have just ordered one!).

Any suggestions? Should I be worried?

It could be a sign of low humidity. I am concerned about the water dish over the heat source. In order for it to create a humid environment, it has to become warm. This may be too warm for your snake. Also, how is your enclosure setup? Do you have a screen top? If so, the humid air might just be evaporating right out the top of the small area of the water bowl.

It is not a screen top, it is a small cabinet-type viv with a mesh strip running the length of the back, near the top. The heat in the hot part is about 30 degrees C, provided by a bulb and a thermostatically controlled heat mat - the water is over part of the heat mat, and reasonably near the bulb, so it gets tepid but it does not seem to evaporate at a great rate.

Incidentally, I misted the viv last night and the eyes look better this morning, so I think I am just going to have to mist frequently even when she is not in shed. I might also put the moisture box that I used when the snake was in shed back as a permanent fixture, as her 'cool end' hide.
