Black Rat snake question

xblackheart Jul 07, 2009 11:11 PM

Can some one post a picture of a hatchling albino black rat snake? Like pre and post shed
Question - Are there any such thing as motley pattern or snow black rats. Maybe like a white snake with pink eyes (white albino).

Are the pure black phase black rats like anery corns or just line bred?

Thanks

Line bred or locality-there is great variability in the wild type of this snake.

I am not sure what you want to know?

there are red amel and white albinos, T pos and T neg black rats, they start out with patterns, and grow differently...the reds turn like reds, oranges, pinks, salmon coloreds...with a pattern usually...the whites can turn all white almost, with some yellows.....

baby black rats....motley patterned....hmmm...I think some will have a bunch of saddles connected at times especially towards the head and along the nuchal blotch.....baby blacks can remind us of anery corns...

you got a pic????.....

...there are baby reds in the classifieds all over the place...

I was looking more for a comparative pic of what a white and red albino looks like when first hatched. I have never seen anyone post the White T- (?) version of the albino.

I can't post pics of albino black rats but the solid black black rats are more loacality. Certain areas of the country produce very nice black specimens while other parts produce more patterned specimens.
It's not a recessive like anerythrism.
It seems as if Missouri and Virginia have good black specimens while areas in between, like my area around North Gorgia, North Alabama and Southeast Tennessee have the more patterned specimens.
So, to go along with that it would seem logical that if you breed two black specimens your odds would be much higher to get black babies.

Basically what the run down is,
I have the all black phase, that I know are het for albino. There is a chance they also carry the white albino gene (according to the breeder they were purchased from). I have heard of white albino, but have never seen any.
Was wondering how you can tell the difference as hatchlings.

Can a red albino produce the white albino?
Can a black snake be het for both red and white albino?

Misty,

If you bred the two different types of albino togather, you'd get normal-looking offspring. The two kinds of albino in Black Rats are incompatible.

I rarely see the all-white type advertised, so chances are very good that you have the more common, orange-type of albino.
With this strain there are high contrast in dividuals as well as nearly all white (patternless) variants.

Here's a crazy little ablino Black Rat that I produced several years ago.

wow! thats about the brightest one that I have seen.
I am waiting until mine shed to get pics of them. then I will post.
I was still hoping Someone would have pics of the white ones. Those are T- right?

I understand that if you bred the two together that you'd get normals. But, the normals that you got would be het for Both types, right? Then if two of the F2 were bred together, you'd get T and T- ?

Misty,

Yes, the normal-looking offspring would be het for both genes. Dick Bartlett explains this in his book "Corn Snakes and Other Rat Snakes." There are some photos in the book as well, but I can't remember if the book has pics of the two different types of albinos.

Here a pic of adults that I used to own. They are of the same strain of albino, but they vary quite a bit in the degree of contrast they have.

Here are my normal BR's in case you wanted to see how much variation even lies in the wild BR's. Even the ones from the same locale are different. Adults, sub-adult, and the first juvenile are Arkansas locale. The last juvenile is South Carolina locale. I have 16 eggs from the first two adults.
