Molding Children's Eggs

reptilicus81 Jul 08, 2009 10:45 AM

I have a clutch of 13 in which one of the eggs quickly molded in (with in two weeks of laying). This is a "pyramid clutch" with one egg on top (the moldy one), two to three underneath that one, and so on. Recently, the three eggs under the top one began to mold too. Since there the eggs are due on the 14th of July, I am curious to why all of a sudden the eggs are molding. The bottom eggs look fantastic though.

The vermiculite is not too moist, and the temps are a constant 88-89 degrees.

Usually, mold won't grow on a live/good egg, so the egg must have died for some reason. The rest should be fine.

Sometimes with close to hatching eggs as the baby prepares to hatch and the egg starts to deteriorate, even good eggs will start to mold. You may consider removing the moldy egg and cleaning off the 2nd level eggs, as they may still hatch.

Thanks!

The moldy egg was firmly attached to the others until they started to mold as well. So I was able to finally remove it safely.

I will take your advice, and hopefully the others will still hatch!

I know that some people try to remove the mold, and there has been some minor success with that, but usually if mold grows, it's a dead egg.

But not always
