im interested in future breeding...help?

wdwilson9 Jul 08, 2009 11:18 AM

I bought a baby hypo colombian a few weeks ago at the dixie reptile show! his color is beautiful! he has a good temperament...a very chill snake! i fell in love with the little guy and like any other herp collector, i want more! i was just wanting to know a few things about breeding, in case i choose to breed in the future. Im sure its time consuming, and may get a lil pricey depending on what i want to breed. but what are some good options to breeding my hypo to and what can i produce from the various breedings...how should i go about breeding them? how many males and females? if anybody has any encouraging words of advice i would love to hear it!!
thanks

p.s. Ill try to get a pic of him up ASAP

You are going to hear this time and time again, but most people will tell you to "breed what you like".

I agree with Jeff Ronne in that most answers will be self serving so I won't tell you what I think you should get, but I will say that whatever it is make sure it's the highest quality you can find. Our hobby is moving further and further away from "just" breeding and closer and closer to "SELECTIVE" breeding. If you're wanting to breed and hopefully sell animals at a later date breed the two best animals you can find. Because the people that are buying right now are the people that will be buying for many years to come - "The Die Hards". And these "Die Hards" have very particular tastes and they know EXACTLY what they are looking for, so if you're just throwing two animals in a cage and hoping for the best it just won't cut it anymore.

So my advice would be to do a little homework and find out who the "Die Hards" are and cater to the wants and needs of that niche.

(Sorry for such a long winded response. I had a big pot of coffee this morning and nobody to talk to. )

I'm new to breeding as well, but a lot of these guys have messaged me and been very encouraging. I agree totally with the selective breeding.
This year I got 2 hypos to breed
trio of 1 double het sunglow with 2 female albinos
and 1 albino male with a het female

this yielded a lot more babies then I had expected.

Now if I'm wrong guys I know you'll correct me so help me out.
But the jungle is an excellent and affordable morph.
From what I'm told it's codominant as is your hypo.
That may be a good place to start or just get a stronger hypo.

is yours a f2 , f3 or better.
try keeping it with the same grade of hypo that being the generation of hypo. Makes for prettier babies.

Thanks again to all those at kingsnake that have helped me with all my questions. And good luck sir with your future breeding projects
