Here is a Link to Watch the Sen. Hearing

Here is the link to watch the senate hearing. If your following this as closely as I am you have probably already hunted it down yourself. But for those who have not seen it yet. Senator Bill Nelson from Florida does alittle show and tell with a python skin and goes over the details of the tragic death of 2 year old Shaiunna Hare.

Of course he leaves out the small details about how the owner of the snake had no permits the cage had no lock and that social services had been called previously concerning drugs being used and sold in front of the children. Or that Darnell had very recently been arrested for marijuana and suspected cocaine. That being said I in no way mean to downplay the death of this poor girl or make excuses. I just wanted to shed alittle more light on the situation.

Nelson waving around a few stacks of paper pleads the senate to add specifically the Burmese Python to the list of injurious species. To ban them as a pet and to ban them from being imported.

Take a look at the total number of reported incidents involving big snakes in the entire country for any given year. Its an EXTREAMLY small number . People can spit out guess work percentages , anecdotes and opinions all day long . The reality is these animals have for all intensive purposes no impact on everyday society . None. The real numbers bear this out. For all the supposed problems everyone talks about the bottom line is virtually nothing ever happens involving these animals. To date they have posed no threat at all to the general public.

The HUGE reason why something like Hr 669 or other anti ownership proposals exist and may pass is... Alarmist escalating their opinions and speculation above the known facts. Showing a complete disregard for the relevant numbers preferring instead to feed into the frenzy. Taking unusual and isolated events and turning them into issues that threaten everyones everyday life .
