To Cut or Not To Cut.. This is my Dilema

jamifi Jul 09, 2009 07:23 AM

Hello all...

This year, I have my first 2 clutches in incubators.
I use hobovators and my temps have been 87-89 mostly right at 89 with 90% or more humidity.
My eggs are 55 days old today and I am starting to become impatient. Aside from that I read so many things about cutting and not cutting I am torn as to what to do. I am hoping that after writing this, I will go home and see at least one pipped, it seems people use this as a key when to cut, so if one is ready, maybe they all will be??
I work nights, so I wont get back to this post until later today.
OH BTW the clutches I have are from a het pied female and a pastel male, I dodnt get her until after she bred so she will be with my het pied male next yr. My het pied male actually bred with a mojave female I have so nothing spectacular this year.
Next yr I will have pieds, albinos and hopefully ivories and a blue eyed if all of the snakes I have mature and breed! This year is practice.

OH BTW my eggs look healthy and are dimpling and sinking some now which is normal for eggs at 55 days as far as I know

Any input would be appreciated

Cut at 60 days OR after the first one "pips"!

Watever Jul 09, 2009 08:04 AM

Never been there yet

but in the wild, they pip and get themself out of the eggs.

I wouldn't cut them, if you never did it and no one is there to show you. You could actually kill them by doing so.

Wait before one pip at least, or if it's getting late, like 60 days.

If they are dimpling then wait. I cut the first year I had eggs and I lost one baby. Really it is not worth it. Your going to come home one morning and find all the little heads sticking out and know it was worth waiting for them to do it.. should not be to much longer.

I like to wait until I see a head or two pipping before I cut any eggs. I have a clutch on day 52 right now, and I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see who the father was, which means I'm currently supressing a major case of snipitis. It is all the more rewarding to see heads pipping, too.

Dude...wait it out...I am on day 59 of my 1st clutch this year...sometimes at those temps they may not hatch till day 65...you may regret cuting if you cut that early...I did like 5 years ago...I will never do it again...once they pip...then go ahead if you cant wait.

I'm on Day 52 too, and having the exact same experience. Not that that's anything new. This is my 4th year breeding, and like...12th or 13th clutch, I think. I've cut all the others around day 55 or so. I'm trying to have some willpower this time around though. I've never lost anything from cutting, but worrying I will for that extra week they sit in the eggs is no fun either.

I have one tiny crack in an egg Now!!!
I am going to wait until at least day 60 IF I decide to cut...
I may not cut at all now, It is day 55 and I can see a few cracks in one egg and its not sunk in anymore meaning someone is moving around in there.I hope to see a full head or a few more cracks at least in the next few days, I will post again and If I can figure it out put a pic or 2 up.
Reminds me of an older commercial slogan..

Good things come to those who wait...
