need help finding a book...

rtdunham Jul 09, 2009 11:21 PM

i ran across a kid in a park in arizona who's caught a local king and local pituophis. I'm sending him a field guide, but i remember a good "snakes in captivity" book i thought would be good for him, too--he's early teens or younger, so it doesn't need to be complicated.

I think i've got that book in florida but i'm in kentucky and won't be back til late august and i'd like to track down a good book for him before then.

any suggestions? I'm remembering a relatively thin, hard-cover, roughly 9x12 format. I searched amazon but didn't see the book i THINK i'm thinking of.

so: what are your suggestions for a kid's first book on snake care?

I'm thinking of the Aaron Mattson book (forget the title), but also liked the P. de Vosjoli books as starters. Nice story Terry -- nothing like affecting the next generation positively.

thanks Jerry. That rings a bell for me too. Unfortunately it doesn't get a hit at amazon. can anyone suggest a spelling change, or a title?

thanks

I think it was something like "Snakes from A to Z" or something along those lines.

There is also an old TFH book authored by John Coborn called: "Snakes: Keeping and Breeding in Captivity"

It was on the shelf about the time some of the first Amel Ruthveni hit them market, but there is much mis information believed true at that time that has yet been proven false....

Terry,

Do you mean this "old school" gem?

Oh man, those are blasts from the past. I still have all three of those. That Ross Allen book was always with me when I got it as a kid.

from my Jr High school on the bottom of the righthand page. I wore out this very book circa 1970, then found it in a friend's collection 35 years later.

Lindsay, that's cool, settles the argument about whether you went to school (I lost the bet).

I'd make some age-related cracks, but I am far too vulnerable on that subject.

first of all, i appreciate everyone's help. maybe the A to Zs will be the book i end up sending him.

but i could have sworn i had a book with "captivity" in the title, and MAYBE "breeding" too, not sure.

in case i don't find THAT one, what are your reviews of A to Z...? Again, I'm looking for a book for a kid maybe 12 years old, he's got a king and a gopher snake he caught (they are gophers and not bulls in az, right? or...) I'm sending him a field guide, but i want him to have a good guide to caring for his snakes.

(btw, he said the baby gopher had eaten a cricket. is that likely?)

Terry, a few of the books like you describe were published by T.F.H. so that may help in your search. I have many many titles from the "easy" to more "scientific". I'll shoot you an email if I run across a better fit for your description here.

I checked the TFH titles, they have 6 or 8 but none are what i'm remembering. The problem probably lies with my memory: when i get back to florida i'll see the book I "remembered" is one of the ones y'all have recommended. Oh well.

Thanks again, everyone. See you at Expo.
