Question on heating and my new tank.

frogsandchams Sep 15, 2003 07:10 AM

I recently acquired my bigger hexagonal tank, maybe 30 - 45 gallons? I have 4 Red Eyes in there now, how many more RETFs can I get for that size? Also, I usually have a screen top on my tanks, or, half screen/half plexiglass. Yesterday my husband made a full plexiglass top on it and drilled holes. First of all, I think the humidity gets a little too high on it so he is going to change it from half/half like the other. But meanwhile, is it safe to put a heat light on top of the plexiglass? The temp inside the tank right now is mid 70's.

The general rule of thumb is 20 gallons for 1 and an additional 10 gallons per tankmate. More is always better. You have your limit plus 1, so I wouldn't add any more.

Temps for REs are around 78-85 day time and 70-75 night. You should be fine for now with the light on the top, just watch the temps. If it starts to get too warm in there just tilt your light a bit. As for hummidity, REs are around 70%.

Hope that helps!

Just wanted to know you think its safe to just put the lamp directly on the glass?

I would try to keep the light from directly on top of the plexiglass, only because from experience the plexi will melt.

Luckily you have a handy husband! It will not be hard for him to make a screen lid, which is absolutely necessary. Don't even try to heat through the plexi. If you are desperate, go through the glass itself.

dont shine the light directly on the plexiglass...

since plexiglass is a petroleum product it will release toxic fumes when heated...
