what a circus yesterday on the road (again!)...

here Teddy and I were minding our own business walking down
the road and we had gotten pretty far this time, when two cars
stopped and everybody jumped out gawking. Geeze, you'd think
people had never seen a 50 pound tortoise going for a walk
before! lol! One guy was on his way to visit a neighbor and
ran to get his camera and kids from the house. I swear (again)
this is the order of questions: Is that real? (in this age of
remote control toys, I suppose that's legit!) What's his name?
What does he eat? (eats nosey people) One guy proceeded to tell
me you could count the rings on his back to tell his age. (uhm,
doh he's 4 years old, I don't think so) all the kids were warned
by the parents not to try to pet him because "he may snap" (yeah
and he's poisonous too OK plus he can fly and become invisible)
everybody was saying "I've never seen a turtle before" they must
mean a turtle that big. I think I may get an anteater to draw
less attention. lol! Later some kids were walking toward us
and I could hear them argueing that it was a cat, no a dog.
Pretty much the first thing I tell people which amazes them is that
he can't swim and doesn't go in the water.
Good old Teddy, he's so funny - I'm glad he's able to go walking
with me!

Ya know what? This is a GOOD thing though. When people ask all these questions you have the opportunity to help educate them about turtles and tortoises and help make them understand that a sulcata (or any other turtle or tort for that matter) is not something that just anyone should go out and impulse buy.

So when folks make you crazy just keep tell yourself you are doing outreach work and Teddy is the ambassador of goodwill.

I get nervous about showing off my torts. I am afraid someone will come and steal them! I only show my good friends. I haven't tried walking mine yet, but I think he would. Every time I walk around his enclosure, he follows me. Of course, he is trying to eat my toes, but that would keep him near me anyway.
